Swipe Fee Legislation Now Law |
|
08/10/2010 |
|
Last month, President Obama signed into law legislation that will reform the debit card swipe fee system. This was only possible because you took action and enlisted your customers to support the effort.
Now, it is time to tell your customers that Congress listened to their call for reform and thank them for their support. Visit http://fightswipefees.com/pass_it_on.asp to download and print a poster to display in your stores. NACS has also developed web banners (located at the bottom of this link) you can include on your website and in email communications to customers.
Through your efforts and those of your colleagues in our industry, more than 5.3 million convenience store customers told Congress to reform the system – and they did. Now it is our responsibility to report back to those 5.3 million customers and thank them for their help. They took time to support our cause; we must report the outcome of our effort and thank them for their critical role in helping to reform this broken system.
Without you and your customers, the well-funded banking lobby would have derailed the reforms that were enacted. This was truly a cooperative effort and every person who collected a signature, sent a letter to Congress, contributed financially to the battle or simply told their friends and colleagues to get involved deserves credit for changing the way the banks treat every retailer in the country.
Congratulations! |

Today President Obama signed into law the financial services reform package that contains provisions to alleviate debit card swipe fees charged to retailers.
WASHINGTON – With the stroke of a pen, debit card swipe fee relief became a reality today as President Obama signed into law a comprehensive financial services reform bill. The new law contains Senator Richard Durbin’s swipe fees amendment, which should result in significant reductions in debit card interchange fees and bring critical financial relief to retailers and consumers while promoting greater competition within the credit card industry.

Big Win for Industry: Senate Sends Swipe Fee Reform to President Obama |
|
07/15/2010 |
|
The convenience and petroleum retailing industry’s nearly decade-long battle to rein in outrageous interchange fees became a reality today as the U.S. Senate voted 60 to 38 in support of the financial reform package known as the Dodd-Frank Bill. Today’s vote removes the last hurdle in getting this bill enacted into law, given that President Obama has said that he will sign the legislation once it clears Congress. The House of Representatives passed the legislation on June 30.
Provisions within the package, known as the Durbin Amendment, direct the Federal Reserve to issue rules to ensure that debit card interchange fees, also known as swipe fees, are reasonable and proportional to the processing costs incurred. Visa and MasterCard currently charge debit swipe fees of around 1 percent to 2 percent of the transaction amount — among the highest rates in the industrialized world.

Make-A-Wish Charity Fundraiser |
|
06/30/2010 |
|
Over an eight year period, beginning in 2003, OMEGA, and our customers, have donated over $870,960 to charities in WV. This year we will again sell "stars" in our stores for the month of August and host a golf tournament on September 29th to benefit Make-A-Wish. Hopefully this 9th year will put us at over $1 million in giving back to West Virginians.
This is probably one of the best efforts that we make as a group. Not only does it give back to our communities, but it bands us together to show what a grateful, giving industry we are.
Now is the time that we ask our retailers to commit to selling stars in their stores during the month of August. Last year there were $118,605 stars sold during this campaign! We would like to sell even more this year. Please complete the attached form and let us know if you would be willing to sell stars and how many batches you will need. The stars come in batches of 100. Even if you have not participated at this level in the past, we hope that you will do so this year.
Soon you will receive registration materials for the September event, which will include information on golf and sponsorship opportunities. We hope that you will sign up to be a sponsor of this event.
With your commitment to this effort we can meet our goal of raising over $1 million for West Virginia's children. |
