With Rising Gasoline Prices, Hoaxes Abound Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03/19/2008
High gasoline prices bring out the e-mail hoaxes, forwarded by well-meaning family and friends. The latest version of this is Where to Buy Your USA-Gas, an e-mail that purports that Saudis are banning American-made goods, and therefore U.S. citizens should return the favor by not purchasing gasoline from companies that import Middle Eastern oil.

Snopes.com debunks the e-mail's claims, noting that the data cited is outdated and inaccurate. And more importantly, major oil companies don't necessarily own and operate all of the retail locations where their gasoline is sold.

Convenience stores sell the overwhelming majority of the gasoline purchased in the United States, and despite canopies that promote a specific brand of gasoline, very few of these stores less than 3 percent are owned and operated by one of the integrated, major oil companies.
