Plastic bags and film recycling increased significantly across the U.S.
in 2006, reaching a record high and validating a growing national
recycling trend sweeping the states. The dramatic increase in
recycling is in part driven by greater demand for recycled plastic and
increased recycling of plastic grocery bags.
An estimated 812,010,000 pounds of post-consumer film (including
plastic bags) was recovered in 2006, according to the 2006 National
Post-Consumer Recycled Plastic Bags and Film Report conducted by Moore
Recycling Associates, Inc. of Sonoma, California. This represents a 24%
increase from 652,477,000 pounds recovered in 2005.

High gasoline prices bring out the e-mail hoaxes, forwarded by
well-meaning family and friends. The latest version of this is Where
to Buy Your USA-Gas, an e-mail that purports that Saudis are banning
American-made goods, and therefore U.S. citizens should return the
favor by not purchasing gasoline from companies that import Middle
Eastern oil.

Skyrocketing gasoline prices are fueling more drive-offs, WALB-TV
reports. NACS estimates that thieves stole $122 million in gasoline in
2006, which costs each of the nations 115,000 convenience stores just
over $1,000 dollars.
While many retailers are switching to pre-payment only to stop gasoline
thefts, some cities have made pay-before-you-pump the law. Little Elm,
Texas, joins a growing number of cities, including several in North
Texas, that require motorist to pay for their gasoline before filling
their tanks, the Dallas Morning News reports.
