| Vote In U.S. House Pending Cap-and-Trade Proposal Word from the nations capital is that there could be a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives tomorrow (Friday) on the Waxman-Markey climate change/cap-and-trade proposal (HR 2454 American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009). As you may recall, HR 2454 would impose new regulations and lead to costly hikes in energy prices, particularly on electricity generated from coal-fired power plants. Some have estimated that electricity rates could go up 50 percent and maybe even 300 percent! West Virginias three representatives have expressed an interest in hearing from West Virginians about this important issue. So, please take a moment to speak out and express your opposition to this costly proposal. Stop this hidden tax increase. 1. Tell Congressmen Mollohan, Rahall and Capito to vote against HR 2454. You can contact West Virginias congressional delegation two ways: Send an email or leave a message at these congressional offices: Congressman Alan Mollohan His district covers from Parkersburg to Wheeling/Northern Panhandle to Clarksburg/Fairmont/Morgantown (202) 225-4172 Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Congressman Nick Rahall His districts covers the southern coalfields from Lewisburg to Beckley/Bluefield/Princeton to Williamson/Logan to Huntington (202) 225-3452 Email: http://www.rahall.house.gov/?sectionid=9§iontree=9 2. You can send your own message by using an on-line system provided by the U.S. House of Representatives -- https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml (Just select West Virginia, and then select your representative.) SUGGESTED MEMO: Here is a suggested memo you can copy and send: The U.S. House is about ready to vote on legislation that is of grave concern to my business and me. The legislation is the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES). This bill, with its cap-and-trade provision, would create a major new tax on American businesses and homeowners and will result in significant economic dislocation and harm. The bill limits the amount of traditional energy needed to run our economy, particularly from domestic fuel sources such as coal and natural gas. It also fails to ensure adequate substitute sources. This failure will cause higher energy prices that -- in today's economy -- may result in a lower standard of living for the American people. Implementing this costly cap and trade system and its regulatory framework, increasing the opportunity for lawsuit abuse, and imposing higher energy prices and taxes will harm American businesses, workers and homeowners, resulting in another blow to the American economy. It also will have a very bad impact on energy producing states such as West Virginia. With the current economic conditions, we cannot afford another setback. Please oppose the American Clean Energy and Security Act. Also, please support West Virginia as an energy state so our jobs, businesses and communities are not devastated by the new environmental agenda. Our states economic security and future are at risk. |
